Snowflakes blinked like giant lashes against our cheeks as we stepped outside. Feathery, delicate flurries danced in the glimmering streetlights. Any remaining woes left us when we caught a glimpse of the red chariot awaiting us, which belonged to Finn’s mom. Our handsome dates leaned casually against the side of the minivan, watching our approach.

Kaiden stepped forward and wrapped his arms around me, his silky voice caressing my ears as he whispered, “Missed you, Beauty.”

“What? It’s barely been twenty-four hours.”

“When you have a good thing, hours seem like years,” he said with a lopsided grin.

“All right, sickos. Break it up,” Amy said with a giggle.

Kaiden’s arm slid around my waist as we turned to face her and Finn. I smiled as I looked at the odd pair. Amy stood next to Finn with her elbow resting on his shoulder. She towered above him on any given day, but tonight, with her knee-high boots, she had six inches on him, give or take.

“Are we going to get this party started or what?” Kaiden said.

“Let’s do this. You ladies will receive first-class service tonight,” Finn said as he slid open the back door. With a sweeping gesture, he said, “Ladies, please enter your limo.”

Amy and I laughed and climbed into the van, upholstered in light gray fabric. Finn’s five-year-old twin brothers’ car seats had been tossed in the rear seat, but evidence of them loomed as we caught a whiff of grease and stale fast food. In the dim interior light, I brushed the remnants of French fries and melted chocolate candies from the bucket seat.

“Oh, those were in case you got hungry,” Finn said.

“Hmm . . . yeah, no, we’ll pass,” I said with a chuckle, and he slid the door shut.

Kaiden slipped into the passenger seat and glanced over his shoulder at me. He reached back and gave my knee a light squeeze before returning his hand to rest on his knee.

Finn hurried around the van and slipped behind the steering wheel. Shivering, he formed his hands into fists and blew on them.

“Brrr. Speak now if you want to change your restaurant choice. Anyone? Somebody, please . . .” he said, peering through his rearview mirror at Amy and me. He waited for a second. “All right, we’re off to pay top price for fish they don’t even cook.”

“The things you do for love, hey, Finny old boy,” Kaiden said, clapping the back of Finn’s shoulder.

Finn’s carefree laughter fluttered through the van as he backed out onto the street. We were off.
